"Ain't I a Woman?"

Well, children, where there is so much racket there must be something out of kilter. I think that 'twixt the negroes of the South and the women at the North, all talking about rights, the white men will be in a fix pretty soon. But what's all this here talking about?

That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain't I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man - when I could get it - and bear the lash as well! And ain't I a woman? I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain't I a woman?

Then they talk about this thing in the head; what's this they call it? [member of audience whispers, "intellect"] That's it, honey. What's that got to do with women's rights or negroes' rights? If my cup won't hold but a pint, and yours holds a quart, wouldn't you be mean not to let me have my little half measure full?

Then that little man in black there, he says women can't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wasn't a woman! Where did your Christ come from? Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothing to do with Him.

If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back , and get it right side up again! And now they is asking to do it, the men better let them.

In a new report, CDC researchers found that US residents - especially females - are
more likely to die earlier and to experience adverse health due to sexual behavior than
people in other rich countries. In their attempt to create the first comprehensive findings
on the health burden related to US sexual behavior, the researchers found that some 20
million cases of adverse health events and 29,745 deaths in the United States were STD-
"The research showed the sexual behavior attributable health burden is about three
fold higher in the U.S. than other developed countries," said CDC's Dr. Shahul Ebrahim,
a study author. The health burdens included infertility, abortions and infections such as
gonorrhea, he said. "All of it is totally preventable and that's the message."
Women comprised 62 percent of all adverse health events, and the majority of
female deaths were related to cervical cancer and HIV. Deaths from curable STDs were
rare for both women and men. The full report, "Sexual Behaviour: Related Adverse
Health Burden in the United States," was published in Sexually Transmitted Infections

NOW...that's not to say we shouldn't fuck all we want and revel in every minute of it. live it up! but use condoms and please, please, please be tested. wanna know why? go over to hpv! the numbers of HPV infected women are on the rise, and you NEED to protect yourself. get pap smears regularly! use condoms, use condoms, use condoms. it's only fair to protect you and your partners.

sorry to be a mommy-type, but i'd hate to think that my little community of revolutionaries was being careless. we're all much smarter than that.

it's up to us to change the way society thinks about female sexuality, so you've GOT to stay in the game.

I just found this community. I just wanted to give a little info about myself..I am 27 (soon to be 28) year old bi female from Buffalo, NY. I am the lead singer in a band called Les Biches. I also play drums and piano.

I have noticed the bisexuals get a lot of crap. if I hear 'it is a phase or she is just confused' one more time, I will hurt someone. I have been bi since I was 14. it isn't a phase. I would like one day for bisexual to be understood and not hated on by some lesbians and thinking it is just to get the guy by straights. all bi people aren't just looking to slut around and sleep with everything. don't stereotype us that way. that's all I have for the moment. I just wanted a quick hello.

Some Last Minute things to think about...
When you go to the polls tomorrow, remember a few things:

Upon taking office 4 years ago, George Bush withdrew US funding from any international organisation that sought to aid, develop and increase the quality of life in third world countries by promoting reproducitve rights and the right to birth control. you can blame our dear friend in the White House for overpopulation, the supression of women's ability to control their own sexual decisions and the encouragement of male dominated societies.

When implementing his AIDS programme in Africa, he only provided funding for organisations that taught abstinence in place of smart sex and contraceptive options. Whatever happened to education being the salvation of the people? Ask George.

Vote smart. Vote for your rights and for the rights of humanity. Tomorrow, Vote Kerry/Edwards.

art project

hello everyone. i am writing to describe an art project i am just starting, and also ask for some help. i have for a long time wanted to begin some sort of rape project that could hopefully touch a broader audience about the subject and also raise awareness. i am a photography major but i work with mixed media, as well.

the basic layout at this stage is to have a polaroid with a small, square piece of text typed out on white paper underneath. the text, for example, would say something like this:

'she was being cared for in a russian orphanage. sometime between the ages of one and three she was sexually abused. consequently, she acts out violently and has uncontrollable rage. she was prescribed zoloft at the age of seven.'

the design of the project will change with time. my initial skteches have been to place the polaroids onto a piece of painted matboard and attach the text directly underneath.

the problem is that i would like for this to become a huge, ongoing project. i am beginning by using people i know who have experienced rape or sexual abuse, but there are many more whom i don't know personally. this is where you can help. would you be willing to share a small portion of your story and a polaroid of yourself? it can be annonymously donated to the project, if that would make anyone more comfortable. but i would like to collect as many of these as humanly possible and, once it is all gathered, create a unique and artistic way to help people in the world WAKE UP about this problem.

**it doesn't have to be rape. it could be anything that involves feeling afraid sexually, because no matter what it's still damaging. also, please link this to your journal if you think that would help to spread the word. this is for women AND men. also, if their is a need for confidentiality, perhaps participants could design masks or a face covering in some way so a picture could still be included?

just got the urge to post a picture of the wonderful kate winslet. i love her beauty, her message, and her curves. she is fabulous because of who she is, and i love that she doesnt let the critics put her down because shes not stick-thin. i think it really says something about the fact that beauty and sexiness is about how you carry yourself, how you love yourself and your confidence in not only your appearance, but your self-worth.

hellooo everyone. i just wanted to bring up an issue/question for everyone to think about.

yesterday i started volunteer training for the sexual assault centre in kingston, ON. it was a really great experience, and im looking forward to getting involved in the community and raising awareness about sexual abuse and violence. i came across something really interesting while i was there, though. we were given a sheet of principles that the centre runs on, and one of them states the centre was "anti-pornography".

now, i understand why it would be against the objectification of women, but it seems to be out of tune with my third wave feminism beliefs in sexual liberation and female sexual power. i really wasnt sure how to feel about that, because i am certainly not anti-pornography and i firmly believe that being anti-porn is not a requirement for feminism. obviously that does not count forced pornography, child porn, etc. and while i understand why some would see porn as objectifying women, i think it can also be seen as empowering.

what is everyone's thoughts on this??

so i was thinking in my western civ I class last night...

we were going over the interpretation of womyn from the bible during the early

and Eve told Adam to eat the apple???

but i was thinking...

why wasn't it interpreted that Womyn are leaders and comanders
and dictators and persuasive, that they have their own will with
logical thinking and do what they think after listening to all ideas equally
(god vs. the serpant)...and men are followers that listen to what womyn say?

it seems that men have been trying to prove since the beginning of time
(not in ALL places) that they are the leaders and that the womyn are the followers...

just a thought
